15-year-old Catherine Oluwatomisin, who was born with Freckles on her skin, has narrated how she has been able to survive the condition despite taunting from her peers.
During an interview with the Punch paper, the girl said, “When I was growing up, I didn’t feel anything, but on getting to 8, 9, or 10 years of age, the way people reacted to me in my surroundings affected me; this made me have low self-esteem.”
“They usually abuse me, calling me a monster, a cheetah, and saying, Look at her body; it is so irritating. It used to make me cry and be sad. I was depressed that time, I won’t lie.”
“When I was in JSS3, everybody got used to me. We were friends, and they didn’t get scared of me.” Something happened last year. I was depressed because one day when I went to buy something, some children said that they were afraid to come close to me so as not to catch the same thing”. Catherine further narrated how she went home and vented her anger on her parents, who brought an adult with the same condition to sensitize her and make her understand that she is fine the way she is.
Additionally, Catherine’s mother narrated how she observed the condition when her daughter was a baby. She noted that when she went to the Lagos State Teaching Hospital, the doctors told her to apply sunscreen to her baby’s skin, claiming that her daughter’s condition was caused by exposure to the sun.
