Taraba State Governor, Dr Agbu Kefas, has taken decisive action by declaring a 24-hour curfew on Karim town and its surrounding areas in the Karim Lamido Local Government Area of the state. The curfew comes in response to escalating communal clashes between the Wurkuns and the Karimjos, resulting in a reported death toll of at least 50 people, with numerous houses burned down during the violent incidents on Saturday.

Confirming the disturbing events, the spokesman for the Taraba State Police Command, Usman Abdullahi, stated that the crisis erupted at approximately 3 am on Saturday, although the exact number of casualties is yet to be officially determined.

Abdullahi described the recent confrontations as sporadic guerilla attacks, explaining, “In the last few days, there have been pockets of guerilla attacks in some communities in the area where the Karimjos attack the Wurkuns, and the Wurkuns also attack in return, or the Wurkuns attack the Karimjos, and they also attack in return.”

In response to the escalating violence, Governor Kefas has imposed a curfew on the entire Karim Lamido Local Government Area, with a directive to security agencies to ensure strict compliance. In a statement released by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Yusuf Sanda, Kefas also called upon the local authorities, including ward heads, village heads, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders in the area, to take note of the curfew and ensure its enforcement.

The declaration of the curfew demonstrates the government’s commitment to restoring peace and security to the affected region. By implementing this measure, the authorities aim to prevent further loss of life and property, and bring the warring factions to the negotiating table for a lasting resolution.

Governor Kefas’ decisive action has been met with both appreciation and concern from residents of Taraba State. While many applaud the government’s swift response to the crisis, there is an urgent call for a comprehensive investigation into the root causes of the conflicts to prevent future outbreaks and establish a sustainable peace in the region.

The Taraba State Police Command has deployed additional personnel to the area to reinforce security and ensure compliance with the curfew. They have urged the public to cooperate fully with the security forces and report any suspicious activities that could further escalate tensions.

As the curfew takes effect, the governor and relevant authorities are expected to engage community leaders and stakeholders in dialogue to find a peaceful resolution to the longstanding disputes. Efforts will be made to address grievances and foster understanding between the conflicting groups, with the ultimate aim of promoting harmonious coexistence and preventing the recurrence of violence.

The people of Taraba State and the affected communities now hope for a swift return to normalcy and the implementation of measures that will ensure lasting peace in the region. The government’s ability to effectively address the root causes of the conflicts and promote reconciliation will be vital in achieving this objective and fostering a peaceful and prosperous environment for all residents.
