Additionally, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak confirmed the ban on foreign students bringing dependents to the country in a post on X on Monday. He stated, “From today, the majority of foreign university students cannot bring family members to the UK. In 2024, we’re already delivering for the British people.” Earlier in May, SaharaReporters had reported the United Kingdom’s intention to ban most foreign students from bringing their families to Britain as part of an immigration crackdown. The Prime Minister’s Office had rejected calls by the Home Office to raise the salary threshold for foreign workers from £26,000 to £33,000 to reduce migration numbers. This move comes amid a significant increase in net migration to 1 million, and some Tory MPs have advocated for measures to control these rising numbers.

It’s important to note that the crackdown will impact master’s students and many other postgraduate students, preventing them from bringing family members. However, PhD students, known for their extended and highly skilled courses lasting between 3 and 5 years, are exempt from this ban.
