Vanguard papers reports that the disregard of the European Union Electoral Report by the Federal Government and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has raised concerns from the Transition Monitoring Group.
Comrade Auwal Musa Rasfanjani, the chairman of the election monitoring group, stated in a statement that civil society organizations engaged in election observation and democracy monitoring as well as local observers had expressed similar worries over flaws in Nigeria’s electoral system.
“Much of the civil society and local observers agree with the European Union’s proposals. In order to make our electoral system more transparent, responsible, and participatory and to regain public trust in the process, the government and INEC must carefully consider these recommendations and endeavor to close any gaps in the election procedures.
Comrade Rafsanjani stressed that the consolidation and achievement of democracy and good governance in Nigeria will only occur when our government sincerely ensures that free, fair, and transparent elections take place.
We implore President Bola Tinubu to exhibit the same bravery as late President Umar Musa Yar’Adua, who acknowledged that his election had flaws and vowed to reform the electoral process. This is demonstrated by the violence, numerous election petitions currently pending in the nation, and the decline in Nigerians’ participation in the elections. TMG calls on President Tinubu to ensure successful change as a result.
“The EU saw the electoral process; their report should not be disregarded. The government’s and INEC’s contempt for the advice of the European Union, which they invited to witness the elections, is depressing.
Additionally, he said that by ignoring both local election observers and the EU Election Report, the government and INEC might be sending the incorrect message.
He claimed that TMG stressed that electoral misbehavior should not be accepted and that the government and INEC should endeavor to solve electoral corruption and impunity. TMG claimed that doing so would considerably enhance our election process and bring integrity.
In order to ensure free, fair, transparent, and credible elections in Nigeria, Mr. Rafsanjani continued, “The EU Electoral Report and local elections observers report should not be dismissed, but rather it should be looked into and the necessary action should be taken.”
