2023 Polls: Tinubu rejects EU report, says election credible
President Bola Tinubu has rejected the report of the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU-EOM), describing it as “a product of a poorly done desk job.”
He said the EU did not provide any substantial evidence ble enough to question the integrity of the 2023 election outcomes.
Presidential spokesperson Dele Alake stated this position in a statement on Sunday.
Nigeria held its general election in February and March. Supplementary elections were also held in April.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, the winner of the 25 February presidential poll.
Mr Tinubu defeated 17 other candidates to emerge winner and was inaugurated on 29 May.
His victory is however being challenged in court by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, and the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi.
Ambode reunites with Tinubu, Sanwo-Olu, Fashola
Smiles lit his face as he took his seat among President Bola Tinubu’s disciples, associates and other statesmen.
It was a day of reunion. For the first time in four years, former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode was reunited with his leader. That was after the seeming parting of ways, following the 2014 governorship primary, which he lost to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Although the reception was organised for the President by his successor, Ambode also received special attention.
It was at the Lagos State House, Marina, which hosted him as chief executive between 2015 and 2019.
Ambode made an unexpected public appearance. The former governor shook hands warmly with many dignitaries. They included his colleagues in the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF), members of the National Assembly and other presidential aides.
Ambode appeared to be in high spirits. He hugged and patted other dignitaries on the back. Many were happy that the curtains have been drawn on four years of self-alienation and political seclusion.
Mr. Consolidator Ambode joined his successor, Mr. Sellable Sanwo-Olu, and his predecessor, Mr. Actualiser Babatunde Fashola, to present a special gift to Asiwaju Tinubu, their godfather, leader and benefactor.
Nigeria will face food crisis in next three months – Attahiru Bafarawa
A former Governor of Sokoto State and member of the Peoples Democratic Party Board of Trustees, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa, raised concern on Sunday over the banditry in the North-West and North-East, saying it has constituted a serious threat to food security in Nigeria.
According to him, instead of talking about cabinet ministerial appointments, subsidy, and the economy, the government of President Bola Tinubu should consider food security as his priority.
The elder statesman also warned that if stringent measures were not taken to curb insecurity, the North would face severe educational backwardness in the next 50 years.
Bafarawa, who stated these in an interview with The PUNCH, said that many primary and secondary schools in Northern Nigeria have been shut down because of the activities of bandits, saying, “This is a serious disaster.”
Our correspondent reported that while the announcement by the government of the removal of subsidy on petrol culminated in a hike in the price of food and consumables, discussions about the ministerial appointment by the President have dominated discussion in recent times.
But Bafarawa advised that the government should set its priorities correctly.
Why corps members are yet to receive June allowance – NYSC
The National Youth Service Corps said the delay in the payment of June allowance to corps members is from the banks, saying it has completed all arrangements for the payment since June 27.
The Director, Press and Public Relations, NYSC, Eddy Megwa, in a statement released on Sunday in reaction to agitations over the delay, assured that the corps management is interfacing with the banks to fast-track payment.
He said: “The Management of National Youth Service Corps wishes to state that it is aware of worries and agitations by corps members over the delay in the payment of their June 2023 monthly allowance.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the scheme completed all arrangements for the payment of corps members’ allowance since June 27, 2023, and remittances were made the same day to various banks accordingly.
“The delay being currently experienced is due to the administration of funds by various banks who are yet to credit Corps Members’ accounts.
“In line with the above, NYSC management is assiduously interfacing with the banks to fast-track the payment of corps members’ June allowance without further delay.”
He enjoined corp members to “remain calm, law-abiding and dutiful in their respective places of national service as the scheme will continue to treat issues relating to their welfare with utmost priority”.
