Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, the Director of Media and Advocacy for the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), asserts that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu did not abolish the fuel subsidy; rather, it was the former president Muhammadu Buhari.

According to Baba-Ahmed, Buhari planned to remove the fuel subsidy until June, when he knew the new administration would be in place, in an interview with Vanguard.

Upon becoming office, Tinubu realized that the subsidy had already been eliminated. Baba-Ahmed claimed that even if Tinubu might have ended the subsidies if it had continued, credit shouldn’t be attributed to him for doing so.

When he took office, Tinubu “discovered that the subsidy had already been removed,” in his own words. As a result, Tinubu shouldn’t be given credit for eliminating the subsidies. Buhari was ultimately the one who did it, but he would have if it had still been there.

There were quick price increases and conflicting reactions from the people after Tinubu’s declaration that the fuel subsidy was gone at his inaugural speech on May 29th.
