Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, the Director of Media and Advocacy for the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), asserts that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu did not abolish the fuel subsidy; rather, it was the former president Muhammadu Buhari.

According to Baba-Ahmed in an interview with Vanguard, Buhari had planned for the elimination of fuel subsidies until June when he knew the new administration would be in place.

When Tinubu took office, he found that the subsidy had already been eliminated. While Tinubu might have eliminated the subsidy if it had been still in force, according to Baba-Ahmed, credit for its elimination should not be assigned to him.

When he took office, Tinubu “found that the subsidy had already been eliminated,” in his own words. As a result, Tinubu shouldn’t be given credit for eliminating the subsidies. Buhari was ultimately the one who did it, but he would have if it had still been there.

The removal of the fuel subsidy was announced by Tinubu in his inaugural speech on May 29. This led to an instant price hike and conflicting reactions from the general people.

Some people applauded the subsidy’s withdrawal, while others thought that steps should have been taken to lessen its impact. Baba-Ahmed stated that he does not believe Tinubu could have handled the circumstance any better.
