The Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) failure to launch its defense against Peter Obi’s charges of cheating in the 2023 presidential election on Monday is no longer shocking.
You may recall that the former governor of Anambra state had filed a legal challenge to President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of victory in the 2023 presidential election.
Peter Obi and the Labour Party filed a petition together claiming that the officially recognized winner of the contentious presidential election, Bola Tinubu, was in fact not the true victor.
On June 23, Peter Obi concluded his case in the presidential election petition court after presenting numerous pieces of documentary evidence and having various witnesses testify in his favor.
To prove that President Bola Tinubu legitimately won the presidential election as stated, the electoral authority called its first witness on Monday and court procedures commenced. However, INEC’s legal team was unable to produce the witness when the case was called for hearing.
Because of several flaws, the electoral body was unable to provide its first witness. The first potential witness INEC identified as being involved in a family matter.
The five-member panel of the presidential election petition court, led by Justice Haruna Tsammani, was convinced by INEC’s lead lawyer, Mahmoud, SAN, to postpone further proceedings in the matter until Tuesday.
