NLC Declares Nationwide Strike Over Tinubu's Fuel Subsidy Announcement- one

The Nigeria Labour Congress is to speak with President Bola Tinubu on the campaign to raise the retirement age for civil officials to 65 years old.

The NLC’ s National President, Joe Ajaero, told The PUNCH on Sunday that labor would not give up on the agitation that it began under the previous administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The NLC reportedly urged Buhari to raise the retirement age for federal officials during the 2023 May Day celebrations, according to The PUNCH.

Festus Keyamo, the minister of state for labor at the time, said that Buhari would not be able to handle the situation given that it was the final year of his term.

” The procedure to bring about that modification to 65 years (assuming it is approved by the Federal Government) is a procedure that cannot be finished prior to the conclusion of Buhari’ s term. The incoming administration will therefore have to deal with that, Keyamo had stated.

The NLC President responded ” Yes” when asked on Sunday if Tinubu and the legislature would meet to discuss the issue. The core civil service is now one of the few remaining institutions.

“Therefore, we are requesting that the retirement age and minimum tenure requirements for the whole public sector, including the civil service, be raised to 65 years of age and 40 years, respectively”.

The National Treasurer of the NLC, Hakeem Ambali, also spoke with THE PUNCH correspondent and stated, ” Yes, we are going to negotiate that, to avoid the impending catastrophe and suffering of our members, whose Contributory Pension Deduction were not remitted to their PFAS by a major number of labor companies”
