Tragedy struck on Saturday as unidentified gunmen launched a violent attack on a parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Ogun State. During the attack, the pastor was fatally shot, and seven worshippers were abducted.
Confirming the incident, the Ogun State So- Safe Corps Commander, Soji Ganzallo, revealed that his officers swiftly responded to the distress call and successfully rescued the seven kidnapped church members. Additionally, one of the kidnappers was neutralized during the rescue operation.
According to a statement released by the Director of Information and Public Relations for So- Safe Corps, Moruf Yusuf, Commander Ganzallo provided details of the harrowing event. The attack occurred at approximately 12 am on Saturday, July 1, at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Desires of Nations Parish, situated in Ogun Province 22, Abule- Ori, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area, Daily Post reports.
Commander Ganzallo emphasized the prompt and proactive nature of the rescue mission. He stated that the Owode- Egba Zonal Command’ s special operation team, led by ACC Jimoh Rasaki Omoniyi, sprang into action immediately upon receiving the distress call. Their primary objective was to secure the safe release of the abducted victims.
The Corps Commander shared that the combined efforts of the So- Safe Corps and the police yielded positive results. The seven kidnapped individuals were rescued unharmed, while one of the kidnappers lost his life during an intense exchange of gunfire. Several other suspects sustained severe injuries during the operation.
Commander Ganzallo expressed his commitment to ensuring the capture of the remaining fleeing suspects, as both the So- Safe Corps and the police intensify their joint efforts to bring them to justice.
The deceased kidnapper’ s body has been transferred to a nearby morgue for further investigation and identification purposes.
This shocking incident has once again highlighted the need for enhanced security measures to protect places of worship and ensure the safety of worshippers. The RCCG community and the residents of Ogun State are in mourning over the loss of their pastor and continue to pray for the full recovery and well- being of the abducted church members.
