Alhaji Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, an elder statesman and former governor of Sokoto State, expressed grave concern over the deteriorating state of affairs in Nigeria. Bafarawa warned that if urgent measures are not taken to address the situation, things might continue to grow from bad to worse in the near future.
Speaking with newsmen at his residence on Sunday, Bafarawa highlighted the devastating level of insecurity, particularly in rural communities across the nation. He emphasized that if the current tragedy continues unabated, Nigeria and its people will suffer multiple negative consequences.
Bafarawa, who is also a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), pointed out that Nigeria is likely to face severe challenges such as food security issues, increased rural-urban migration, a rise in out-of-school children, and a worsening security situation. He attributed these issues to the activities of bandits and other criminal elements who are preventing farmers from accessing their farmlands.
The former governor stressed that no part of the country is immune to the threat posed by terrorists masquerading as bandits. He unequivocally stated that insecurity has reached its peak in Nigeria.
Bafarawa urged immediate action to halt the alarming degree of insecurity, as failure to do so could lead to food scarcity and the inability to guarantee the safety of lives. He expressed concern that farmers are being extorted and prevented from farming unless they comply with the conditions set by the terrorists.
“The topmost priority of every common man in Nigeria is how to feed himself and his family and not about who becomes the Senate President or holds any other political positions,” Bafarawa emphasized.
He called on leaders entrusted with the nation’s responsibilities to take the situation seriously before it is too late. Bafarawa urged the government at all levels, particularly the federal government, to prioritize and address the security challenges.
Bafarawa also cautioned politicians to prioritize the pressing issues facing the country rather than engaging in political power struggles. He warned that Nigeria is confronted with numerous problems that need to be addressed step by step.
