As the nation continues to grapple with the harsh economic effects of the high cost of petrol across the country, veteran journalist, and public affairs analyst, Jide Johnson has come out to lampoon the Tinubu administration over additional taxes being imposed on the populace.

Recall that a few days ago, reports began making the rounds in the country’s media space indicating that the Federal Government has imposed an annual ‘Proof Of Ownership’ tax of the sum of one thousand Naira on all vehicle owners across Nigeria.

However, speaking during an interview on PLUS TV a few hours ago, Johnson, who is the Chief Lecturer at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, argued that a government that means well and cares for the well-being of its citizens will not set out to deepen the holes in the pockets of the people by imposing more tax burdens on them.

He said; “We have to ask if the government really cares about us. Do they care about us when they impose too much tax burden on the people? Too many taxes have a ripple effect on the people because it deepens the hole in their pockets. Such taxes increase the cost of living for poor Nigerians who are already struggling to maintain a low standard of living.

All those in public office, those who are taking decisions for us, when last did they use their hard-earned money to buy fuel for their cars? Most of these people have been in government since 1999, either directly or indirectly. So, a government that claims it cares for the people should not be imposing more tax burdens on the same people.”
