Ezekiel Nya-Etok, a political analyst, has faulted the recent statement released by the presidency shortly after the presentation of the final report by the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU-EOM). While speaking in an interview with Central TV, he said that President Bola Tinubu should have reacted differently, adding that his administration didn’t conduct the 2023 general elections and he shouldn’t take responsibility for it.
Recall that the president rejected the final report presented by the EU observers and made it clear that the presidential election was the most credible and best-organized in Nigeria since 1999.
While reacting to this, he said that the response from the presidency wasn’t fair. He noted that the EU hailed President Tinubu for the steps that he has taken regarding the removal of fuel subsidy and the reaction it got from the presidency after it spoke about the election wasn’t necessary. He made it clear that Tinubu didn’t conduct the election and he should have thanked the EU for its position and promise to interrogate the process.
“If I were in their position, I would have thanked the EU for their position and said that we didn’t conduct the election but we will interrogate the process. I want to tell President Tinubu that you didn’t conduct the election. Don’t take responsibility for what you were not a party to because 90% of Nigerians know that the election was flawed so coming to tell us that it was perfect is not good enough.”
