Federal Capital Territory (FCT) workers have deplored partial implementation of President Bola Tinubu’s directive for payment of N35,000 provisional wage award to all treasury-paid Federal Government workers for six months.
The decision, aimed at cushioning effects of the fuel subsidy removal, followed an agreement between government and organised labour. The Guardian learnt that federal workers only got the stipend for the month of September.
An official with one of the paramilitary outfits, who spoke on condition of anonymity, lamented the delay, noting: “This is Nigeria, we are beginning to feel that we have been deceived. It’s a way of life in Nigeria, as you can’t take any promise from our politicians seriously again. I just hope this is not one of those promises.”
Another worker in the office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, who also craved not to be mentioned, regretted that the government had taken workers for granted, adding: “The sad part of it is that our labour unions have now been reduced to the level of a toothless bulldog. They can’t bark and bite like before. So, we have been left to cope with our fate.”
A reporter with one of the government media outfits, submitted: “It is unfortunate that workers have been left to grapple with the spiralling inflation and hardship in the country.
“Agreed N35,000 is not much, but it can solve our problems to some extent. See where we are now. No explanation, nobody is telling us why we have not been paid.”……Continue Reading………
