Why the Cold Stares?’: Nigerian Woman Questions Fellow Citizens’ Behavior in the UK

A Nigerian woman residing in the United Kingdom, Silva Omoruyi, has voiced her concerns about the interactions among Nigerians in the diaspora. In a TikTok video, she observed that when Nigerians encounter each other in the UK, they often exchange prolonged stares instead of greetings, which she finds unsettling. She remarked, “Why do Nigerians pass each other without exchanging pleasantries? But they’ll be staring at you like a thief. Nigerians in diaspora have to do better.”

Silva further shared an experience where a Nigerian woman at her workplace appeared to harbor animosity towards her without any prior interaction, contrasting this with the kindness she received from a Ghanaian colleague.

Her observations have sparked discussions online, with some Nigerians in the UK acknowledging similar experiences. One commenter noted, “When I first landed, I used to greet everyone, but I noticed people didn’t reply… even those we enter the lift together with don’t greet.”

This discourse highlights the challenges of maintaining cultural connections and fostering community among Nigerians abroad.
