The Special Assistant to Atiku Abubakar on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, has weighed in on the report by the European Union Election Monitoring Group that the February 25th presidential election was marred by irregularities. Shaibu tackled Tinubu’s aide, Dele Alake, for trying to discredit the EU report.
A few days ago, the European Union team had presented its final report on the 2023 elections to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). In its report, the EU team said that the election exposed the systemic weaknesses and signalled a need for operational reforms to enhance transparency, accountability and inclusiveness.
While reacting to the report, Dele Alake who is the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Special Duties, Communications and Strategy, had described the report as jaundiced, and said that the report was meant to sustain the same premature denunciatory stance contained in EU’s preliminary report which was released in March.
He said that they reject any notion from any organization suggesting that the 2023 election was rigged.
While reacting to the report, Phrank Shaibu asked why Dele Alake should say that the European Union has no right to talk about the election when the EU was the largest single donor to INEC.
In the report which was made by Daily Post on Monday July 3rd, Shaibu said – “The EU not only provided training for INEC staff but also donated equipment only for INEC to conduct a shambolic poll. So why would Alake claim that the EU has no right to speak when it was the largest single donor to INEC? Mr Alake should rather be quiet than try to defend the indefensible.”
