Why EFCC Arrested VeryDarkMan: Sowore Blasts Anti-Graft Agency in Fiery Rebuttal

Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has once again found himself at the center of public attention following his recent arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on May 2, 2025. The social media activist, known for his outspoken critiques of public figures and institutions, was apprehended in Abuja under allegations related to cyberbullying and online harassment.

According to EFCC sources, multiple petitions were submitted against VDM for allegedly using his social media platforms to “intimidate and defame” individuals, which may constitute an offense under Nigeria’s Cybercrimes Act of 2015. The agency emphasized that the arrest followed due process and that VDM will be released upon fulfilling his bail conditions.

“The EFCC lacks the constitutional power to arrest anyone for defamation or libel. Those are civil matters, not criminal cases under EFCC’s jurisdiction,” Sowore stated in a social media post.

He further alleged that the arrest was in retaliation for VeryDarkMan’s bold accusations against the EFCC leadership, whom he accused of corruption and misconduct.

VDM’s lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, also criticized the arrest, revealing that his client was detained without being told the specific charges and was allegedly mistreated in custody. “He was blindfolded and beaten. This is a clear abuse of power,” Adeyanju said.

Interestingly, VDM was arrested shortly after visiting a Guaranty Trust Bank branch to report suspicious deductions from his mother’s account. Eyewitnesses claim he and a friend were taken forcefully from the premises.

As of this report, the EFCC is reportedly preparing formal charges. Meanwhile, online campaigns calling for his immediate release are gaining momentum.

The arrest of VeryDarkMan continues to spark a nationwide debate about freedom of speech, abuse of power, and the role of law enforcement in the digital age. With Sowore and other voices demanding accountability, all eyes are on the EFCC’s next move.
