The President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, has said that when the presidency was zoned to the South, the Igbos felt that it was their turn to produce the next President. He said this during an interview with The Punch which was published on Sunday July 2nd.

Iwuanyanwu said that when civilian government returned (in 1999), Olusegun Obasanjo became the President, and after that, he handed over to the late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, and from there, it came to Goodluck Jonathan. He said that Yemi Osinbajo, a Southerner, was also a Vice President when Muhammadu Buhari was President.

He said – “When it (presidency) was zoned to the South this time around, the Igbos rightly felt it was our turn.”

Iwuanyanwu lamented that the Igbos who have played a major role in the development of Nigeria’s economy have not held the position. He said that when the presidency did not come to the South-East this time around, they felt sad.

He expressed gratitude to the Afenifere leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, Chief Edwin Clark and some leaders in the North whom he said were of the opinion that the Igbos have made huge contributions to Nigeria, and that with their loyalty and faithfulness to Nigeria’s Constitution, the presidency should be zoned to the South-East.
