In the 1970s and 1980s, Nelly Uzonna Uchendu coached an extraordinarily successful Enugu State squad. Uchendu rose to prominence as a contemporary pop musician who revitalized folk music. When Uchendu released the top 10 hit “Love Nwantinti,” he became an overnight sensation.

Cross River was where Martha Ulaeto first set down roots. It wasn’t just in Calabar that her song was well known; it was played all over Nigeria. Her music, which incorporated elements of disco and funk, was met with passionate dancing. Released in 1982, “Love at First Sight” remains one of her best-known songs to this day.
