A lawyer for the Labour Party (LP), Levi Uzoukwu, claimed yesterday that INEC was not ready to defend its case before the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, where the LP is challenging INEC’s declaration of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the winner of the 2023 presidential election. Uzoukwu said he hoped INEC would defend its declaration so that the public could learn more about what happened during the elections.

After the court reopened its hearing, INEC was unable to begin its defence against the petitions filed by the Libertarian Party’s (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi and his People’s Democratic Party (PDP) counterpart Atiku Abubakar, so Uzoukwu made this statement.

Mr. Abubakar Mahmoud, SAN, INEC’s legal counsel, said that the commission’s witnesses were unavailable.

Uzoukwu told reporters outside the court that it seemed like INEC wasn’t ready for its defence, pointing to the electoral umpire’s own inconsistencies and contradictions as evidence.

The LP attorney insisted that his side had solid evidence and was prepared to proceed with the case.

The Vanguard newspaper reports him as adding, “Given the contradictions and inconsistencies and what INEC has done, I’m sure they’re not ready to defend this case.”

“I stand to be proven wrong, but I would wish that they defend this matter so that the public will see more things of what happened to this election.”

Dear readers what is your take on this?
