Tambuwal loses out as Mwadkwon, Plateau north senator, becomes minority leader

Simon Mwadkwon, senator representing Plateau north, has beaten Aminu Tambuwal, senator representing Sokoto south, to become minority leader of the upper legislative chamber.

The minority leadership of the upper legislative chamber was announced by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday.

“The minority caucus of the senate is made up of about seven political parties and have come up with their leadership so I will proceed to announce [the names],” Akpabio said.

“Senator Simon Mwadkwon, minority leader; Oyewumi Olalere, deputy minority leader; senator Darlington Nwokocha, minority whip; and senator Rufai Anga, deputy minority whip.”

Tambuwal, immediate-past governor of Sokoto and a former speaker of the house of representatives, was interested in leading the minority caucus of the senate.

However, when the principal officers of the minority leadership was announced, his name was conspicuously missing.

TheCable had reported how the former governor’s bid to be minority leader was met with stiff resistance from members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Fire Guts Hotel In Onitsha

Fire has gutted the popular Soprom Hotel in the commercial city of Onitsha, Anambra State, destroying property worth millions of naira.

The state’s police spokesman, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, who confirmed the incident on Monday, said the fire started around 5am and that policemen were immediately deployed to the scene to maintain law and order.

Oil Theft: 9 Illegal Refining Sites Uncovered In Bayelsa

The pipeline contractors operating in Bayelsa State have uncovered a total of nine illegal refineries sites with a combined total daily production estimated to be more than one million barrels per day (bpd), in three communities in Bayelsa State.

 The discovery was made possible through the efforts of security operatives in the ongoing war against crude oil theft and illegal refineries in the Niger Delta region.

The illegal refineries commonly called ‘Kpofire’ in local parlance in the state were uncovered in Okordia, Zarama, Biseni in Yenagoa Local Government Area, and the boundary communities of Ibelebiri and Otuege(Agba) in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

Speaking with journalists at the site of one of the busted illegal refineries located 8 kilometres inside the swamp forest of Zarama Clan, the Spokesman and Mobilisation Officer of Daven Oil and Security Enterprises, Comrade Okardi Yogo, said a total number of nine sites have so far been uncovered during the operation.

INEC closes defence in Peter Obi’s petition, presidential election court accepts more exhibits

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Tuesday, closed its defence after calling its only witness to testify in opposition to the petition filed by Peter Obi and the Labour Party (LP) at the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC).

INEC’s lawyer, Abubakar Mahmoud, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), announced the closure of the first respondent’s case after its witness, Lawrence Bayode, a Deputy Director in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Department of the commission, finished testifying.

After the testimony of the sole witness, INEC’s lawyer, Mr Mahmoud, told the court that f INEC’s defence in the Obi and Labour Party petition is closed.

Mr Olanipekun later told the court that Messrs Tinubu and Shetimma, listed as second and third respondents in the petition, will open their defence Wednesday.

The five-member panel headed by Haruna Tsammani adjourned until Wednesday for them to open their defence.
