President Tinubu Sets Up Committee On Tax Reforms, Names Chairman

President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of a Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms.

This follows his promise to remove all barriers impeding business growth in Nigeria, a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Revenue, Mr. Adelabu Zacch Adedeji, on Friday, said.

The committee will be chaired by Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader at PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Mr. Taiwo Oyedele.

Soyinka blasts Ilorin emir for cancellation of Isese festival

Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka, in an open letter has critisised the Emir of Ilorin, Sulu Gambari, for reportedly banning a Yoruba cultural event, the Isese festival, from holding in the Kwara State capital.

The playwright on Thursday said the emir’s action is an assault on civilized conduct.

Shortly after Adesikemi Olokun, an Osun devotee, reportedly released fliers announcing a three-day traditional event aimed at celebrating certain Yoruba deities, an Islamic group, Majlisu Shabab li Ulamahu Society, stormed her residence to warn her not to hold the celebration.

The group said they were sent by the emir, Punch newspaper reported.

The spokesperson of the Emir of Ilorin, Abdulazeez Arowona, reportedly said the emir and the palace supported the action of the Islamic group. He, however, said the group was not sent by the emir.

President Tinubu made the disclosure on Thursday at the Sports Arena of the 2 Div Nigerian Army Head­quarters, Oojo, Ibadan, during the Grand Finale of the 2023 Nigerian Armed Forces Day Celebration (NADCEL 2023).

Tinubu in his words as­sured Nigerians of his deter­mination to protect lives and property across the country.

Delivering his keynote address, the President, who was represented by the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, equally promised better fund­ing, equipment and robust welfare packages to advance the professional efficiency of the Military.

He also urged Army per­sonnel to adhere to interna­tional best practices in their operations, as well as mil­itary-civilian relationship while taking them on the need to be resolute as their sacrific­es will not be in vain.

Gov. Mbah Inaugurates Enugu JAAC, Says Council Funds Must Work For The People

Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah has inaugurated the state’s Joint Accounts Al­location Committee (JAAC), saying that local government funds must be made to lift the people out of poverty.

The 16-member Commit­tee has Comrade Anthony Udeh as Chairman, Dr. Pe­ter Aneke as Secretary, while other members include the Accountant General of the State, Mr. Tony Okenwa, and the Chairman of the Associ­ation of Local Governments of Nigeria, Enugu State chapter, Hon. Okechukwu Edeh.

Inaugurating the Com­mittee at the Government House Enugu on Thursday, Governor Mbah described the local government as the layer of government closest to the people, the reason he said those, charged with the man­agement, monitoring, and distribution of local govern­ment funds must be men and women of integrity to ensure that the people are sufficiently and positively impacted.
