Segun Sowunmi, a PDP gubernatorial aspirant in Ogun State, has alleged that other ethnic groups are closely observing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s actions. According to Sowunmi, the appointment of Yoruba individuals to key governmental positions has caught the attention of various ethnic communities. Sowunmi stressed the importance for Tinubu to avoid the mistakes of his predecessor and promote inclusivity in his government. He suggested that the Yoruba community’s handling of these influential roles will be closely monitored, as they are seen as a significant test for Tinubu’s leadership.
Segun Sowunmi, a gubernatorial aspirant for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the upcoming 2023 election in Ogun State, has made allegations regarding the actions of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. During a meeting with Yoruba Media Practitioners, Sowunmi claimed that other ethnic groups are closely observing Tinubu’s moves. He pointed out that the President has appointed individuals of Yoruba descent to key positions of power in the government. Sowunmi emphasized the importance for Tinubu to learn from the mistakes of his predecessor and ensure inclusivity in his administration.
He said, ”The Hausas, the Igbos, and all other ethnic groups are looking, saying the Yoruba have it now, we will see how they will handle it. The Chief of Army Staff is a Yoruba man, the IG is a Yoruba man, the Customs CG, is a Yoruba man and the CBN head is also a Yoruba man, they won’t be surprised if a Yoruba man also becomes the minister of finance. All these steps that Tinubu is taking, they are monitoring and watching, I can say this because we are close to them.”
Sowunmi highlighted that various ethnic groups, including the Hausas and Igbos, are paying attention to the current situation where Yoruba individuals hold influential positions. According to him, the Yoruba community’s management of these roles will be closely scrutinized. Sowunmi listed several prominent positions, such as the Chief of Army Staff, Inspector General of Police, Customs Comptroller General, and the Head of the Central Bank of Nigeria, all occupied by Yoruba individuals. He even suggested that it would not be surprising if a Yoruba person were to be appointed as the Minister of Finance. These steps taken by Tinubu are being monitored by other ethnic groups, as claimed by Sowunmi, who asserted that he has insider knowledge on the matter.
