The Labour Party’s candidate for president, Peter Obi, filed a petition on February 25 alleging that the election was rigged and that he was the winner. The Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, declined to file a response on Monday.
The electoral umpire requested that the Presidential Election Petition Court, presided over by Haruna Tsammani, postpone the start of the defense to the following days, according to a report by VANGUARD.
Remember that the Tribunal had previously instructed INEC to begin its defense on July 3 following the end of the cases put out by the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), the LP, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He then requested that the matter be continued to July 4; Justice Haruna Tsammani complied.
In the meantime, LP attorney Levi Uzoukwu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), commented on the circumstance and stated that it is obvious INEC has not adequately prepared to defend its case before the court.
He said he was curious to see how the electoral body would respond to the vocal opposition.
Given the ambiguities, inconsistencies, and actions taken by INEC, he asserted, “I’m sure they are not prepared to defend this case.”
I’m open to being proven wrong, but I’d want to see them defend this case so that the public can learn more about what transpired during this election, he continued.
