Intensifying the Fight Against Insurgency
General Musa disclosed that new equipment had already been acquired to intensify operations against terrorists, particularly in the northern region, where attacks have escalated. He noted that President Tinubu has given directives to enhance all security measures while fostering collaboration with neighboring countries to curb the cross-border infiltration of insurgents.
“The porous nature of our borders is exacerbating the security issues,” General Musa stated, emphasizing the importance of regional cooperation to address the challenge.
Enhancing Defence and Community Engagement
The CDS highlighted that the military’s current strategy involves not only acquiring air assets but also enhancing other essential security equipment. Additionally, there is a focus on non-kinetic measures, including improving grassroots community development to address insecurity from the root.
General Musa also pointed out that the President is engaging with state governors to ensure that the benefits of governance reach local communities, which will help reduce insecurity.
Addressing Cross-Border Threats
He linked the recent spike in insecurity to global terrorism efforts, especially those driven by jihadist groups operating within the Sahel region. The porous borders, according to General Musa, remain a significant concern, prompting the government to ramp up border security efforts.
A Call for Public Support and Caution
General Musa urged Nigerians to support the Armed Forces by reporting suspicious activities promptly. He also cautioned against the spread of fake news, particularly misleading videos from other countries falsely presented as Nigerian incidents.
“If we see something that is going wrong anywhere in the country, let us report. Action will be taken, including against our personnel if they are found wanting,” he assured.
The CDS reaffirmed the military’s commitment to restoring peace and security, emphasizing that President Tinubu is deeply concerned and determined to address the nation’s security challenges head-on.
