According to Baba-Ahmed, it was former President Muhammadu Buhari who removed the fuel subsidy, and not President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as some might believe.

According to Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, the Director of Media and Advocacy of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), former President Muhammadu Buhari, not President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was the one who removed fuel subsidy. In an interview with Vanguard, Baba-Ahmed clarified that Buhari had already made provisions for the removal of fuel subsidy, with the intention that it would take effect until June, when he knew the new administration would be in place.

Baba-Ahmed emphasized that Tinubu, upon assuming office, discovered that the subsidy had already been removed. Therefore, he should not be credited with removing the subsidy. Although Baba-Ahmed believes that Tinubu would have removed it if it were still in place, it was ultimately Buhari who took the action.

The statement suggests that Buhari had already planned the removal of fuel subsidy before the end of his tenure. It implies that the decision to remove the subsidy was a strategic move by Buhari, allowing the new administration to manage any potential backlash or consequences arising from the removal.

Baba-Ahmed’s remarks highlight the need for accurate attribution and acknowledgment when it comes to policy decisions and actions taken by political figures. He seeks to clarify that while Tinubu may have been supportive of removing the subsidy if it were still in place, it was Buhari who made the actual decision and initiated the process.
