The decision to remove fuel subsidy has faced criticism from those who argue that the government failed to implement measures to mitigate its impact beforehand. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had explicitly stated during his inauguration speech that fuel subsidy was no longer in effect.

However, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, the Director of Publicity and Advocacy at the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), holds a different opinion. In an interview with Saturday Vanguard, he asserted that Tinubu was not the one responsible for the removal of fuel subsidy; rather, it was President Buhari who made the decision. Baba-Ahmed went on to explain that Buhari had been subsidizing fuel until June, which coincided with Tinubu’s inauguration as President. It was only then that Tinubu discovered the subsidy had already been removed.

According to Baba-Ahmed, Tinubu should not take credit for the removal of the subsidy. While Tinubu may have removed the subsidy had it still been in place, it was ultimately Buhari who took the initial action to remove it.
