According to Channels Television, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended his Senegalese counterpart, President Macky Sall, for his decision not to run for a third term once his current term expires.
Protests have erupted in Senegal in recent weeks in response to reports that President Sall, who is nearing the end of his second term, may seek a third term.
President Sall will finish his second term in office in 2024. He announced on Monday to the people of Senegal, which has one of the most stable democratic governments in Africa, that he will not run in the country’s presidential election on February 25, 2024.
President Tinubu, reacting to this, stated that with this decision, President Sall has prioritised the interests of his country, the peace and stability of the West African region, above his personal interests.
The Nigerian president, who praised his Senegalese counterpart’s choice, said that history will be kind to President Sall.
Tinubu said, “It is heartening that President Macky Sall has decided to honour the constitutional term of office and not run for a third term in Senegal.
“It has brought great joy and relief. As a Democrat, I must applaud my brother’s statesmanship. With this singular decision, President Sall chose his people’s stability, security, and economic well-being over narrow personal interests.
“The consequences of this important decision will be felt far beyond Senegal’s borders and across our West African sub-region.
“President Sall has demonstrated that leadership is about honourably serving the people and leaving the stage when the constitutionally mandated time is up.”
