In a recent interview with the media, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, the Director of Publicity and Advocacy for the Northern Elders Forum, shared his thoughts on the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the 2023 Presidential Election. According to Baba-Ahmed, the North, which is home to both Christians and Muslims and known for its political sophistication, gave the largest share of votes to each of the four candidates: Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Tinubu, and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Baba-Ahmed explained that Tinubu received 63% of the votes from the North because the region saw promise in him. He expressed hope that Tinubu would live up to the expectations of the North and deliver on his promises.
“The North is often misunderstood by those outside the region. It is a politically sophisticated region, with both Christian and Muslim communities. Each candidate received a significant portion of the votes from the North. Tinubu’s 63% votes was a result of the North recognizing his potential. I hope that he will not disappoint them,” Baba-Ahmed said.
It is evident from Baba-Ahmed’s statements that the North’s decision to support Tinubu was based on their perception of his capabilities and the belief that he can fulfill the aspirations of the region. The North, being a diverse and politically aware part of the country, has shown its confidence in Tinubu’s ability to lead. Only time will tell if Tinubu will meet these expectations and deliver on the promises made to the North during the election.
