Protests Against Economic Hardship Continue Across Nigeria

On April 7, 2025, Nigerians across multiple states took to the streets to protest worsening economic conditions and the alleged misuse of the Cybercrime Act. Organized by the Take It Back Movement, demonstrations occurred in cities including Abuja, Lagos, and Port Harcourt.

Protesters cited high inflation, removal of fuel subsidies, and perceived authoritarianism as key grievances. In Abuja, demonstrators were met with tear gas as they attempted to approach the National Assembly. In Lagos, access to the State House of Assembly was blocked.

The protests also highlighted concerns over Section 24 of the Cybercrime Act, which critics argue is used to suppress free speech. Human rights organizations have expressed alarm over the government’s response to the protests, citing arrests and alleged use of excessive force.

These demonstrations reflect growing public frustration with economic policies and restrictions on civil liberties in Nigeria.
