President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is facing a deadline of less than 30 days to form the Federal Executive Council (FEC), as mandated by the constitution. To meet this requirement, he is reportedly considering appointing technocrats, politicians, and seasoned public servants to key positions. The declaration of Tinubu as the new president by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) a few months ago led to his inauguration on May 29th.

In line with this, there have been speculations regarding the inclusion of notable individuals in the ministerial nominees. The Saturday Sun paper reported that the president might nominate Pat Utomi, a prominent figure in the Labour Party, as one of the potential ministers. Additionally, the name of Valentine Ozigbo, a former governorship candidate from the People’s Democratic Party in Anambra State, could be sent to the national assembly for screening.

However, it remains uncertain whether members of Tinubu’s party would be willing to join his administration in forming a government of national unity. The Labour Party, in particular, has strongly contested Tinubu’s victory in the presidential election petition tribunal held in Abuja. Their resistance raises questions about the potential challenges Tinubu may face in consolidating a unified government.

As the clock ticks towards the expiration of the constitutionally-mandated 60-day timeframe, President Tinubu’s decision on ministerial appointments will significantly shape the direction of his administration. Balancing the demands of technocratic expertise, political alliances, and public service experience will be crucial in assembling a capable and effective Federal Executive Council.
