Peter Obi: “Igbos rightly felt it was our turn when presidency was zoned to the south” – Iwuanyanwu

He declared, “The Igbos have been denied positions at the highest levels since 1979, when General Ibrahim Babaginda handed over authority after Moshood Abiola won the presidential election but was not given the victory. Since he was a very good friend of mine, I stood by him, and when Abiola didn’t win, Ernest Shonekan became the leader of the Interim National Government.

Because he was a close friend of mine, I supported him, and after Abiola lost, Ernest Shonekan took charge of the Interim National Government.

When the military eventually resumed, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo led the subsequent civilian government, which then passed to the late Umaru Yar’Adua before arriving in the South-South [Goodluck Jonathan]. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was also in office. The Igbos thought it was our turn when the presidency was designated to the South this time.
