Femi Falana (SAN), a lawyer highly regarded and esteemed, has raised concerns about the prolonged duration of the procedures, involved in handling petitions challenging the outcomes of Nigeria’s presidential elections.

During the Law Week Programme of the Nigerian Bar Association, Benin Branch, held in Benin City, Edo State, Femi Falana addressed the issue in his keynote speech. He asserted that, “In Nigeria, it typically takes 8 months to validate the results of the presidential and legislative elections, whereas the confirmation of the governorship election results, usually takes 10 months. He continued, The Constitutional Court in Angola, and the Supreme Court in Kenya, resolved the petitions challenging the results of the presidential elections, declared by the election management bodies, in a span of 14 days in each case.”

Currently, the Presidential Election Tribunal in Abuja, is hearing the cases brought forth by the Labour Party’s candidate, Peter Obi, and the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, who are challenging the victory of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in the presidential election. The tribunal began its proceedings a few weeks ago, to consider the arguments presented by the involved parties.
