In the wake of President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the state’s House of Assembly members on March 18, 2025, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors have rallied in support of Fubara. The PDP Governors’ Forum, led by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, condemned the federal government’s actions as unconstitutional and expressed unwavering solidarity with Fubara and the people of Rivers State.
The governors convened in Ibadan, Oyo State, to deliberate on the crisis and resolved to challenge the emergency rule at the Supreme Court. They instructed their Attorneys General to seek judicial interpretation of Section 305(3) of the Nigerian Constitution, which pertains to the declaration of a state of emergency.
This collective stance by the PDP governors underscores a significant political confrontation between the opposition party and the federal government, highlighting concerns over constitutional adherence and democratic governance in Nigeria.
