Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has stated the reasons why Igbos supported Labour Party candidate Mr Peter Obi in the previous election.
In an interview with Punch paper, he stated that the Igbos were correct in believing that 2023 is their turn to deliver the next President after a lengthy wait since 1979. He claimed that the area was committed to backing other South African Presidents.
”The Igbos had been deprived of jobs at the highest level since 1979, when General Ibrahim Babaginda handed over authority when that Presidential election was won by Moshood Abiola and he was denied the victory,” he stated. Ernest Shonekan was my very good buddy, and I backed him even though Abiola did not get it.
When the military was eventually disbanded, the next civilian government was led by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and passed on to the late Umaru Yar’Adua before moving to the South-South [Goodluck Jonathan]. Yemi Osinbajo was also the Vice President. When the presidency was designated to the South this time, the Igbos rightfully believed it was our turn.’
