NLC, TUC to Begin Indefinite Strike from October 3

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have announced their decision to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike from October 3, 2023. The labour unions said the strike is to protest against the removal of fuel subsidies and the resultant hardship and suffering of Nigerians.

According to The Punch, the NLC and TUC issued a joint communiqué after their separate emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meetings in Abuja on Tuesday. They accused the federal government of being insensitive and unwilling to address the consequences of its policy on the masses. They also demanded an immediate review of the minimum wage and other welfare issues.

The labour unions urged Nigerians to brace up for a long strike and use the remaining days to stockpile foodstuffs and other necessities. They also directed their members and affiliates to mobilise and prepare for the total shutdown of the country…………………………...CONTINUE READING

Meanwhile, the NLC and TUC had earlier given the government a 21-day ultimatum to meet their demands, which expired on September 26. They also staged a two-day warning strike on September 5 and 6, which was partially observed by some workers.

The federal government has not yet reacted to the latest declaration by the labour unions.
