Witnesses said the Labour Party members were traveling in Sienna Bus branded in the party’s colours when they were attacked by the gunmen who shot at the vehicle and subsequently set it ablaze, killing all the occupants.
“This happened just moments ago. The gunmen came out of nowhere and started shooting at the vehicle. They shot it severally before setting it ablaze.
“We watched the vehicle burn, but couldn’t held because there was nothing we could do. When the car finished burning, we approached it and I can count three corpses already.”
Unknown gunmen have killed and burnt the senatorial candidate of the Labour Party for Enugu East senatorial district, Mr Oyibo Chukwu.
The gunmen also killed five supporters who were with him inside his car.
The PUNCH gathered that the incident happened at Amechi Awkunanaw, Enugu South Local Government Area on Wednesday evening.
The governorship candidate of the Labour Party, Chijioke Edeoga, who confirmed the unfortunate incident, said that the gunmen shot him inside his vehicle with five other people with him and set the car ablaze.
“It is true that our senatorial candidate for Enugu East senatorial district for Saturday’s election has been killed. They (gunmen) shot him and five others and set them ablaze.
“Our party members are being targeted for assassination by political parties that felt threatened by the rise of the Labour Party in the state and are afraid they may lose the Saturday’s election.”
It will be recalled that the Labour party campaigns and political activities had been attacked on several occasions.
Several members and supporters of the party had been injured and property worth millions destroyed by gunmen believed to be working for the ruling party in the state.
Meanwhile, efforts to get reaction from the Enugu State Police Command were unsuccessful as the command’s spokesman, DSP Daniel Ndukwe could not be reached at the time of filing this report.
Oyibo Chukwu Owelle in his last post wrote: “I believe your Pastors have taught more than enough to make you to know the right choice to make on the day of the Election.
They need not spell it out outrightly for you to know the right choice to make.
“My Priest admonished us earnestly not to be swayed by tribalistic or party sentiments.
Rather, our choices should be based on standing by what is RIGHT‼️
“He further reiterated that we should endeavor to vote regardless of the outcome of the election results, as long as your conscience is satisfied that you have done what is RIGHT and JUST for your future.
“VOTE FOR THE FUTURE YOU WANT TO SEE.
“Please VOTE FOR PETER OBI as I believe he posses the capacity to make NIGERIA GREAT AGAIN, by God’s Grace.”
A Facebook user, Udemadu Kaycee likened the killing same as that of Chief Udara, the owner of Udara Fc and attributed the killing to the Baggards secret cult, claiming that is how the cultists operate.
He wrote: “there is nothing like unknown gunmen .. these are baggers cult gangs that take assasination contracts .. police are aware of these gangs , they hv contact facebook page and numbers, they hv even agents abroad ,the same guys and method used in killing the udara guy at nnobi junction… most of these guys hv being arrested and handed over to the police many times and they always find their way out … is political sponsored hit .. both enugu and anambra governors are weak and unconcerned about insecurity”.
