Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, president-general of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has urged for the release of the detained leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). He made this plea during an interview with Punch paper in response to Niger Delta leader Asari Dokubo’s recent request that Tinubu should not release Nnamdi Kanu.
He stated that the Igbos had made significant investments in Nigeria and that the 1966 coup d’etat that precipitated the lengthy hostility between the Igbos and other tribes in Nigeria was caused by circumstances beyond the Igbos’ control. According to the president-general, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will gain great respect in Nigeria and Igboland if he considers doing only one thing: releasing Nnamdi Kanu.
Chief Iwuanyanwu said in proverbs, “Tinubu is my friend and the Igbo’s friend, and he should know that there is a thing in Igboland.” When a child is weeping and pointing somewhere, the child is most likely seeing something. He should know that we are not fools, and no one can tell Igbos what is going on in Igboland. Nnamdi Kanu’s release is critical to us, and if Tinubu releases him, he would be widely regarded in Nigeria and Igboland. He has not killed anyone and has not been charged with murder. Kanu should have been released by now, but he is unwell.”
