Ayo Fayose, the former governor of Ekiti State, has vowed to be the first to criticize President Bola Tinubu if he fails to fulfill his campaign promises. Fayose expressed his determination to closely monitor the government’s actions and offer constructive criticism whenever necessary.
During a meeting with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Fayose emphasized that he did not anticipate Tinubu’s failure. He acknowledged that any delays would not be intentional on the president’s part. Fayose also commended Tinubu’s performance since assuming office, asserting that he should be supported as he cannot accomplish everything alone.
Fayose stressed that the elections were over, and it was now time to govern. He called upon Nigerians to rally behind President Tinubu, describing him as alert and having a clear vision for the country.
When questioned about the purpose of his visit and whether it was related to potential appointments, Fayose stated that he was not seeking a position. He believed that one could contribute to the success of the administration without holding an official appointment. He also affirmed his commitment to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and clarified that while he, Seyi Makinde (the Governor of Oyo State), and Nyesom Wike (former Governor of Rivers State) were working with Tinubu, he would never join the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Fayose reasserted his dedication to the PDP and encouraged politicians to move forward with elections. He expressed his satisfaction with the new beginning in Nigeria and the government’s direction.
Regarding his membership in the PDP and the possibility of accepting an appointment from the president, Fayose categorically stated that he would never become a member of the APC. He emphasized that Nigeria’s interests transcend political parties and that one did not require an appointment to make a difference. Fayose acknowledged that not everyone could hold an appointment in a country of over 200 million people, but he was ready to provide direction wherever he was. He reiterated his support for the new southern president and expressed his readiness to address any detions from campaign promises made by Tinubu.
When asked about reviving the PDP, Fayose highlighted his previous criticisms of former President Muhammadu Buhari and emphasized his willingness to speak out if Tinubu failed to fulfill his promises. He declared that he was not afraid to face challenges and would provide honest feedback when necessary.
Fayose concluded by stating that he would do more than just oppose the government in power; he would courageously hold them accountable. He believed that opposition did not require political party affiliation but should be based on the actions and performance of the government. However, he also emphasized the importance of not opposing for the sake of opposition and not attacking innocent individuals.
