Ayodele Fayose, the former Governor of Ekiti State and a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), indirectly revealed the reason behind his collaboration with the G-5 Governors from his party during the February 25, 2023 Presidential election. He clarified that their goal was to ensure the emergence of a Southern President and not to defect to the All Progressive Congress (APC) or work against their own Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Fayose firmly stated, “Let me unequivocally state that I will never become a member of the APC. The agenda I pursued with the G-5 was to secure a Southern President.”

During a press conference in Abuja, the former Ekiti Governor indirectly disclosed that he, along with former Governors Nyesom Wike and Samuel Ortom, as well as Governor Seyi Makinde and others, worked towards the victory of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu instead of Atiku Abubakar. He clarified that his alliance with the G-5 Governors was solely aimed at ensuring a Southern President.

Fayose reiterated his refusal to join the ruling party and expressed his commitment to remain a member of the main opposition party until he retires from partisan politics. He clarified that his support for Tinubu was not driven by political appointments but by the importance of power-sharing.

Furthermore, Fayose emphasized that he would not hesitate to criticize Tinubu’s administration if the former Lagos governor fails to align with his stated commitments.
