FUOYE Vice-Chancellor Suspended Amid Sexual Harassment Allegations

The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina, has been suspended following allegations of sexual harassment made by a senior university official, Engr. Folasade Adebayo. The suspension was enacted after Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, expressed strong dissatisfaction with the university’s initial handling of the case, which had cleared Prof. Fasina and recommended that the complainant apologize.

In response to the minister’s concerns, the Chairman of the Governing Council, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, convened an emergency online meeting on April 14, 2025. During this meeting, the Council resolved to suspend Prof. Fasina. However, upon his request, the Council permitted him to proceed on a six-month accumulated leave instead of a direct suspension.

Prof. Samuel Olubunmi Shittu, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), has been appointed as the Acting Vice-Chancellor for the duration of Prof. Fasina’s leave.

The allegations against Prof. Fasina were initially dismissed by the university’s Governing Council, which had also directed the complainant to apologize. This decision faced criticism from the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), which called for an independent investigation, citing concerns over the integrity of the initial proceedings.

The situation continues to evolve as stakeholders call for transparency and accountability in addressing the allegations.
