On Saturday, April 12, 2025, a petrol tanker exploded near the Toll Gate area of Ibadan, along Lead City University Road. The incident occurred around 2:45 PM when the tanker, carrying premium motor spirit (PMS), reportedly lost control while navigating a damaged section of the road. It overturned and exploded, sparking a massive fire.
The explosion destroyed several shops, vehicles, motorcycles, and other properties in the area, with estimated losses running into millions of naira. Fortunately, no fatalities were recorded, as the tanker driver and his assistant managed to escape the scene unharmed.
Emergency responders, including the Oyo State Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service, arrived promptly and managed to contain the blaze before it could spread further.
This incident has sparked renewed concerns among residents about the poor state of roads and the safety regulations governing fuel tankers. Community leaders are calling for urgent government intervention to fix hazardous roads and enforce stricter measures to prevent future disasters.
