Former Manchester United Academy Midfielder Joe Thompson Dies at 36 After Third Battle with Cancer

Joe Thompson, a former Manchester United academy player and Rochdale midfielder, has died at the age of 36 following his third battle with cancer. Thompson passed away peacefully at home on April 17, 2025, surrounded by his family.

Born in Bath, England, Thompson joined Manchester United’s youth academy at the age of nine. He later embarked on a professional career that included over 200 appearances for Rochdale across multiple spells. Thompson’s resilience was evident as he overcame Hodgkin lymphoma twice during his playing career. In April 2024, he was diagnosed with stage four lymphoma for the third time, which had spread to his lungs.

Manchester United paid tribute, stating, “A man who epitomised our club’s values… our thoughts are with Joe’s family and friends at this difficult time.” Rochdale FC also honored him, highlighting his inspirational journey and indomitable spirit.

Thompson is survived by his wife, Chantelle, and their daughters, Thailula Lily and Athena Rae.
