Oladotun Hassan, a former member of the dissolved APC Presidential Campaign Council, expressed his disagreement with the European Union’s (EU) report on the conduct of the 2023 Presidential Election. According to him, the report was biased and aimed at undermining both their hopes and democracy in general. Having reviewed some of the report’s contents, he highlighted a statement made by Datti Baba-Ahmed on Channels Television, which the EU seemed to support. Hassan perceived this as the EU singling out the APC party for condemnation and painting them as the sole entity to be held accountable.

In his words, he said:

“The way and mamner the report was drafted was to dampen our hopes and democracy. I saw some of the content of the EU’s report; there was a statement made by Datti Baba-Ahmed on Channels Television, and the EU gave a support to his statement and targeted the APC as the only condemnable cow that must be taken to Golgotha.”

Hassan strongly criticized the manner in which the EU’s report was drafted, claiming that it was designed to dampen their optimism and faith in the democratic process. He believed that the report lacked balance and fairness, focusing disproportionately on the APC party’s shortcomings while disregarding other actors and aspects of the election. By endorsing Datti Baba-Ahmed’s statement, the EU seemingly reinforced their bias against the APC, portraying them as the only guilty party that must face severe consequences.

In Hassan’s view, the EU’s report displayed a clear intention to target and vilify the APC. He used the metaphor of “taking to Golgotha,” a reference to the biblical site where Jesus Christ was crucified, to emphasize the severity of the EU’s condemnation and its potential negative impact on the party’s image. Hassan felt that such a one-sided report not only undermined their efforts but also undermined the broader democratic system, raising concerns about the impartiality and objectivity of the EU’s assessment.

Ultimately, Hassan’s reaction to the EU’s report reflected his dissatisfaction with what he perceived as an unfair and biased portrayal of the APC in the context of the 2023 Presidential Election. He criticized the report for undermining democracy and the hopes of the party, suggesting that the EU’s endorsement of specific statements further contributed to their skewed representation of events.
