The release of the EU report has stirred public discourse in Nigeria, raising concerns about the credibility of the electoral process and leaving citizens divided over the legitimacy of the current government and their preferred candidate, Mr. Peter Obi.
The European Union Electoral Observer Mission recently released a report on the 2023 elections in Nigeria, describing them as a result of poor planning and heavy reliance on a select few individuals. This report has triggered reactions from Nigerians, with some asserting that their preferred candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, should have won the mandate. Festus Keyamo, the chief spokesman for the All Progressives Congress during the 2019 and 2023 presidential elections, responded to the widespread comments about President Tinubu’s legitimacy circulating on social media following the release of the EU report.
He wrote, “…all the hoopla over that EU report is neither here nor there when it comes to legitimising or delegitimising the government of the day. That power or responsibility belongs to the judiciary. I hope those who are now gyrating excitedly as if they are ‘speaking in tongues’ over the EU report will also have the spirit and ‘anointing’ to accept and embrace the actual forensic judgment by our properly constituted law courts when they eventually decide on the 2023 elections.”
Keyamo addressed the uproar surrounding the EU report, stating that it ultimately holds little significance in terms of legitimizing or delegitimizing the current government. He emphasized that the power and responsibility to determine the legitimacy of the government rest with the judiciary. Keyamo urged those enthusiastically celebrating or criticizing the EU report to also be prepared to accept and embrace the final judgment from the duly constituted law courts once they decide on the 2023 elections.
The EU report highlighted the flawed nature of the electoral process and has fueled debates among Nigerians who believe that the election results do not reflect the true mandate of the people. Many are questioning the credibility of the election and expressing their dissatisfaction with the electoral system’s shortcomings. Some are particularly supportive of Mr. Peter Obi and feel that he should be the rightful leader based on their preferences.
Festus Keyamo’s response seems to downplay the significance of the EU report, emphasizing that it is not the ultimate authority in determining the legitimacy of the government. He urges Nigerians to wait for the final judgment from the judiciary, which he believes holds the true power to settle any disputes regarding the election results.
