Chike Ogeah, a former commissioner for information in Delta State, said in an interview with Arise that, if he were divided, he would be half Igbo and half Yoruba, adding that, he is perplexed as to why it always comes down to the Igbos and the Yorubas. He said it in response to the burning down of homes in Lagos’ Alaba Market.

He asserted during the interview that, I’m delighted to see a cosmopolitan governor like Jide Sanwo-Olu, in charge of Lagos state at this critical juncture. Having a governor with an inclusive mindset is crucial because, if we were to have a hard-line Yoruba irredentist leader instead, it could lead to unnecessary tensions and conflicts.

He further said that, It’s always puzzled me why in Nigeria, issues seem to revolve around the Igbos and Yorubas, even though their differences were not the cause of the problems in the past, such as during the civil war. As someone who is part Igbo myself, I find it disheartening that, these historical divisions continue to play a role in current events.

According to Ogeah, whenever the issue is traced to the civil war, it always turns out to be that. The Yorubas are not the Igbos’ problem, and the Igbos are not the Yorubas’ problem. He did, however, applaud Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for working with the Igbo leaders, to find a solution to the problem.
