‘Brilliant player’: Gary Neville picks out £25m player Leeds nearly signed as one to watch in Qatar

Senegal ended up losing their opening World Cup clash with The Netherlands today, as Ismaila Sarr failed to live up Gary Neville’s billing.

Sarr, who is currently plying his trade with Watford in the Championship, was linked with a host of moves in the summer.

Leeds were said to be close to signing him, while Aston Villa are also known admirers of the tricky winger.

Before the clash with Holland today, Sarr was picked out by the pundits in the studio as being a danger man. Indeed, Gary Neville claimed he admired the Watford winger, admitting his surprise that he’d not got himself a move to a Premier League side just yet.

“I always loved Sarr at Watford. I thought he was always a brilliant player and actually I thought he’d go to a top club,” Neville said on ITV Sport before the game.

Of course, in the actual game, Sarr was a shadow of his best. He never really got going as Senegal put in a disappointing performance overall.

If Leeds and Villa were still watching on, then they’ll want more from Sarr. With two games against Qatar and Ecuador to come, the Watford ace will hope to do much better.

TBR’s View: Sarr needs consistency to warrant Premier League move

This performance today from Ismaila Sarr pretty much summed him up. Had the odd moment where he looked ok but then for the most part, wasn’t involved.

That is why he’s not got that big move just yet. Yes, he has bags of talent but he needs to produce more often and today, he essentially blew his big moment.

The good news for Sarr is there are two games to go for him to go and show what he can do. And if he does, then Leeds and others might well come sniffing again in January.
