Barcelona fans have told Manchester United that they don’t want Frenkie de Jong to quit the Nou Camp and move to Old Trafford.
The Red Devils missed out on landing the Netherlands midfielder in the summer but could once again attempt to finally prise him away from Spain during the January transfer window.
De Jong came through the Willem II academy before moving to Ajax in 2015. The 25-year-old spent two-and-half years playing underneath current United boss Erik ten Hag during his time at the Johan Cruyff Arena and helped the team win the Dutch league and cup double during the 2018/19 campaign.
De Jong also impressed as the Dutch club reached the Champions League semi-finals in the same season. And the talented player departed the Netherlands to move to Barcelona once the campaign had come to an end.
De Jong has played 157 times for Barca but was reportedly available to buy in the summer as the Spanish giants looked to balance their books and raise valuable funds. The ace ultimately stayed at the Nou Camp – and Barca fans have warned off United once again.
Mundo Deportivo surveyed their readers to get their thoughts on De Jong. And a staggering 84 per cent of the people who responded said the player is untouchable and should not be sold.
De Jong is currently with the Netherlands squad at the World Cup as his country prepare to take on Senegal, Ecuador and hosts Qatar in Group A.
The player has 45 caps to his name and will start in midfield barring any injury issues. But he has failed to start in nearly half of Barca’s matches in all competitions this season – and it remains to be seen whether his club will try to move him on in the New Year.
De Jong has three-and-a-half years remaining on his current deal. And in the summer, Barcelona reportedly rejected a £56million offer from the Red Devils.
But they could be more willing to accept a similar offer in January after being knocked out of the Champions League when they finished third in their group.
Barcelona haven’t played United since they defeated the Red Devils over two legs in April 2019 to progress to the Champions League semi-finals.
But the two sides are set to go head-to-head in a two-legged showdown in February in a Europa League play-off.
The winner of the match will reach the knockout stages of Europe’s second tier club competition – and it remains to be seen whether De Jong will be pulling on the Barca shirt during the showdowns.
