Arsenal are also considering making a move for Ajax’s 17-year-old wonderkid Jorrel Hato as they eye up defensive reinforcements.
But deals for Brentford’s Ivan Toney, Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, Brighton’s Evan Ferguson, AFC Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke and Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz are believed to be unlikely at this stage.
That’s because Arsenal are reportedly in a tight spot regarding profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) – which may limit their activity in January.
The club’s immediate priority it to sign David Raya permanently for £27m, with the Brentford goalkeeper having arrived at the Emirates on loan this summer.
Quizzed about Arsenal’s plans for the January transfer window on Wednesday, Arteta said: ‘We have certain targets and ideas.
‘We don’t know how the squad is going to look in two weeks time. It’s a very tricky market that shifts quite quickly.
‘If there is something that can improve the squad, we’re always going to be open to do that.
‘At the moment it’s very difficult, we are really short. There are areas where we’ve been exposed in the last few weeks.
‘Hopefully we get players back. In what condition and when, that’s a different question.’
Arsenal are back in action on Thursday when they host West Ham in the Premier League – and will return to the top of the table if they defeat David Moyes’ side.
