Following his exit from politics, Tinubu became involved in efforts to bring Nigeria’s opposition groups together and to advocate for election changes. In 1979, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Chicago State University.

He is known by the tribal aristocratic title of asiwaju, which was bestowed upon him by the Oba of Lagos, the ceremonial figurehead of the state of Lagos.

EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION

Oluremi Tinubu was born on September 21, 1960, and is an Ogun State native. Oluremi, the last of twelve children, spent her early years in her home state of Ogun, where she finished both her elementary and secondary schooling. Following the completion of her basic education and receipt of her First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC), Oluremi went on to enroll in the West African Senior Senior Certificate Examination at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State in 1979. The Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo City, Ondo State, awarded Oluremi a National Certificate of Education in Botany and Zoology in 1982. Oluremi pursued her goal of enhancing her human capital by earning a Bachelor’s degree in Biology Education from the University of Ife, which is now known as Obafemi Awolowo University, in Osun State.

From the Redeemed Christian Bible College in Ogun State, Oluremi received a Post Graduate Diploma in Theology in 2010. Oluremi was ordained as a pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God in 2018, eight years after receiving her Post-Graduate Diploma from the Redeemed Christian Bible College.

FAMILY AND MARITAL LIFE

Bola Tinubu was friendly with Oluremi’s family because he was close with her older sister. Due to her matchmaking abilities in introducing Oluremi and Bola Tinubu, this older sister played a crucial role in their relationship. Oluremi and Bola Tinubu were wed in 1987. Folashade, Seyi, and Abibat are the three children born into the union.

CAREER

Armed with a degree in Education, Oluremi Tinubu worked as a secondary school teacher for a short period until her husband, Bola Tinubu was democratically elected as Governor of Lagos State in 1999. As the wife of the Governor of Lagos State, Oluremi Tinubu was involved in social activism within Lagos State. In 2000, Oluremi Tinubu established New Era Foundation with the organization’s objectives geared towards the development of women, children, and youth; promotion of public awareness, and sensitization on environmental health and protection issues, among other set goals.

Oluremi Tinubu served as the matron of COWOLSO, a community-based gender organization that supports the activities of the Lagos State Government on important issues relating to child healthcare, women’s empowerment, and environmental protection. Oluremi Tinubu made significant contributions during her eight years as the first lady of Lagos State in a variety of quasi-official capacities.

As a candidate for the Lagos Central Senatorial District under the banner of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Oluremi Tinubu tested the political waters in 2011. Her entry into national politics was made possible by her electoral triumph. Oluremi Tinubu stood for a second term as the All Progressives Congress’s (APC) candidate in 2015 with the backing of her district, Lagos Central, and did well in the polls.
